HISTORY OF THE PUMP SPRINGS BAPTIST CHURCH

  • Church Pictures

    • Early in the year 1927 a revival was conducted at a small building located in the Pump Springs Community. The Holiness Church had vacated the building. Several local ministers conducted the services that were attended by church members from Mt. Pleasant, Cave Springs, Shawanee and several other local churches. It was a successful revival with several making professions of faith.

When revival services closed, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church accepted into their fellowship a number of the new converts among who were some wishing to organize a Baptist Church in the Pump Springs Community. After they were baptized they were dismissed by letter to become Charter Members of the new church. Several others from local churches joined them in the founding of the new church.

On March 19, 1927 the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church met at the building where the revival was held to help organize the new church. The name chosen for the new church was Pump Springs Baptist Church.

The Charter members of the new church were:
      G. W. Racy
      William Williams
      Nellie Reader
      Pearl Bush
      Mattie Mullins
      Gladys Bush

      Pearlie Racy
      Ida Williams
      Fred Reader
      Ralph Bush
      Raymond Bush
      Marshall Johnson

William Williams and his wife, Ida, were owners of the property and on April 21, 1927 executed a deed for the property to the newly formed church.

Reverend John Ogan was the first pastor of the church and James A. Seals was elected the church clerk.

Twenty-six years later on December 19, 1953 plans were began for a new church building. Reverend Frazier Poore was the pastor at this time. The new building was completed and the first service was held in it on September 7, 1957. Reverend I.S. King was pastor at this time.

Twenty-two years later, under the leadership of Pastor Reverend Casper “Tip” Moore, plans were approved to remodel the old building into classrooms and to build a new sanctuary with a seating capacity of approximately 700. The first service in the new sanctuary was held during December 1979.

In 1987 the church voted to buy property adjacent to the church for future growth and in 1992 funds were secured to pay off that same property. The following is a list of the pastors of the Pump Springs Baptist Church and the year of election.
